What Is PPTP In VPN?

What is PPTP?
Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is one of the oldest used VPN protocols developed by Microsoft. It is the fastest of all VPN protocols, making it ideal for applications where speed is important such as streaming and online gaming. However, PPTP is not as secure because of its weak encryption.

How Does a PPTP VPN Work?
Commonly used for remote access over the Internet, PPTP uses the TCP port 1723 for communication which in turn uses the GRE protocol. The data packets transmitted through the tunnel are encapsulated and treated as IP packets. When initiated from the client side, PPTP tunneling doesn’t need supporting devices like routers, etc.

Why is PPTP a Popular VPN Protocol?
PPTP is not only very easy to set up but also compatible with most desktop and mobile operating systems. The protocol is recommended in cases where speed is more important than security, because it has many well-known vulnerabilities.
